Foreign Policy Correspondent (Miami Herald)
Overview:
We are looking for an aggressive, news-breaking journalist to be the foreign policy correspondent for the Miami Herald (McClatchy) and El Nuevo Herald. The requirements of this job are straightforward: break news on the Trump administration’s policy toward Latin America and the Caribbean and deliver original reporting that is not only competitive but dominant on the stories that matter to our readers.
Please note: This role can be based in Miami or Washington, DC.
Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate will be a fluent Spanish speaker with a deep knowledge of the U.S. relationship with Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti and Colombia. She or he must be an idea generator with strong social roots and a knowledge of the most important issues relevant to South Florida readers. The successful candidate will be expected to proactively self-assign stories as well as work with editors and reporting teams in Washington and Miami. He or she will be able to work traditional sources as well as social media and analytics to identify the stories people are talking about or will be talking about.
Breaking news and advancing storylines on foreign policy and security issues important to the Herald's readership. That involves the Trump administration’s approach to Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti and Colombia.
Driving coverage and pitching ideas that put the Herald and McClatchy ahead of the competition. The correspondent will keep editors informed about what's going on in Latin American policy at the White House, State Department and U.S. government agencies. The majority of the coverage should come from the reporter's notebook, as she/he works the beat, with a smaller amount arising out of requests from Herald editors.
Acting with urgency and focusing on digital. When a big story breaks, the Herald and McClatchy need a short story to move online rapidly, with updates or a new angle to follow.
Maintaining an open, frequent and collaborative line of communication with the foreign policy and security reporting teams at the Herald and McClatchy.
Writing with a digital-first mentality. That includes thinking about shareable headlines, meta heads and SEO words, using links in text and embedding videos and other assets. The reporter will be responsible for creating online and print packages in our content management systems.
