BUILDING INSPECTOR II
THE POSITION: Under general supervision, performs skilled building and related safety inspection work in the interpretation and enforcement of structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and related codes and regulations, regulating new building construction, remodeling, repair, and use; performs related work as required. May require occasional overtime work. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill any future opening(s) in this class for up to nine months.
JOB DUTIES: Performs plan checks on residential and light commercial building plans prior to permit issuance; inspects buildings and structures to confirm that construction, alteration, or equipment installation work is performed in a safe manner, in compliance with provisions of applicable codes and ordinances, and in accordance with the approved plans and specifications; advises property owners and contractors on matters relevant to construction and repair methods and materials; investigates and resolves complaints and problems; checks the quality of materials and the methods of construction utilized; inspects existing buildings to determine hazardous conditions, structural failures, or need for maintenance or repair; performs zoning code and county code enforcement duties; investigates complaints and performs inspections. Inspects and enforces codes and ordinances pertaining to mobile homes; issues certificates of final inspection; issues permits and collects fees; reviews various documentation and processes, forwards, or takes other action as appropriate; reviews/interprets blueprints, architectural drawings, and construction plans and calculations; operates a computer to research, enter, modify and review data; prepares and/or generates various reports, correspondence and documentation; maintains file system of departmental records; provides technical and general information to builders and others regarding requirements of applicable codes and ordinances; maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws and regulations; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate; appears in court as required.
