The clinical research nurse for the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) will be an integral member of the team who specializes in delivering professional nursing care focused on maintaining balance balance between safety of the research participant and the fidelity to the research protocol interfacing with administration, clinical nursing staff, research staff, physicians, patients and families.

Clinical Activities
- Provides direct nursing care within the parameters of the research protocol to attain expected measurable outcomes.
- Provides nursing care to acute and complex patient populations and utilizes appropriate professional judgment and critical decision making in planning and providing care.
- Administers research interventions; collects patient data per protocol specifications; evaluates the patient response to therapy; and integrates evidence-based practice into nursing practice.
- Plans, implements, and evaluates clinical research nursing care to support clinical research protocol visits within the Clinical Research Unit.
- Coordinates clinical research nursing care to maximize customer service, safety and efficiency throughout the research visit.
- Reports nursing assessment to PI and /or study team as needed, provides medication administration, participant teaching, etc. as indicated per protocol.
- Coordinates and facilitates clinical research nursing care between multiple disciplines. Facilitates continuity of care by directing and planning clinical research visits.
- Operates autonomously in communicating with PI and members of the research study team in directing clinical research nursing care.
- Uses relevant evidence-based practice and research to improve clinical practice and investigate nursing care problems.
- Follows universal precautions.
- Collaborates with nursing, medical staff and research professionals in the review of clinical research protocols in relationship to clinical standards of care, protocol needs, and participant safety.
- Provides leadership for direct patient care and protocol adherence collaborating with unit-based nurse management team and study teams.
- Participates in the decision-making process for clinical study cost analysis, unit based operational budgetary decisions and cost containment strategies.
- Participates in the ongoing implementation of current regulatory standards to meet state and national agency requirements and accreditation.
- Performs other special projects and tasks as assigned.
- Acts as a participant advocate. Keeps participants safe in the conduct of clinical research, research interventions and protocol activities. Continually assesses risk and coordinates research activities to minimize participant risk.
- Assures consent is completed prior to visit activities.
- Collaborates with inter-professional teams to address ethical concerns, conflicts, and manage potential personal, ethical and financial conflicts of interest.
- Design and implement participant/family health education activities for clinical research. Supports participant/family/educational activities.
- Serves as an educational and clinical resource or consultant for clinical research participants, family and research staff.
- Facilitates learning and provides consultation for health care professionals and research teams within the Clinical Research Unit.
- Supports coordination, implementation, and evaluation of staff education and orientation programs.
- Supports and facilitates the educational experience for health care students and monitors the care delivered.
- Provide clinical supervision and evaluation of clinical care related to research.
- Participate in trainings and workshops to keep informed on topics related to clinical research
- Attend all department, assigned committees, and staff meetings.
- Demonstrate a willingness to support change for the improvement of participant care and unit operation.
- Ensures that nursing practice is safe, effective, efficient and patient centered. Identifies barriers and opportunities to improve protocol adherence and data collection.
- Recommends strategies to improve nursing quality and operationalization of required protocol activities.
- Achieves professional certification when available.
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience Requirements
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.
- A minimum of 3 years of acute care nursing experience within the last 5 years is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Ability to work occasional weekends, evenings or nights is required.
- General computer skills are required.
- Pediatric nursing or oncology nursing care experience is highly desirable.
- Professional certification in a related field of nursing or research is desired.
- Knowledge of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics policies, procedures and regulations is desirable.
- Knowledge of Clinical Research, GCP and IRB regulations is desirable.
- Strong clinical nursing skills including IV insertion, phlebotomy, and assessment is desirable.
- Epic experience is desirable
- ACLS and/or PALS certified
