Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm
May require occasional overtime.
Job Duties:
Serve as the liaison and coordinator between the College of Dentistry and other State of Iowa dental providers and the Cleft lip and Palate Team at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Perform chairside dental assistance to Orthodontic Graduate students and Orthodontic Faculty and work specifically with the Cleft lip and Palate program.
- Serve as the Cleft lip and Palate Team liaison and coordinator with specific functions including:
- Assisting during cleft team clinic screenings.
- Attending cleft team patient staffing/rounds
- Coordinating patient appointments within the College of Dentistry and the Hospital and facilitating communication and exchange of clinical records with other state of Iowa dental providers.
- Maintaining cleft clinic patient database up to date including future coordinated appointments, patient recalls, appointment coding and facilitating active patient transfers between residents.
- Facilitating communication between parents, patients, clerks and business office.
- Keep an efficient orthodontic graduate clinic flow by:
- Assisting chairside in the provision of oral/orthodontic healthcare to young children and children with special needs.
- Assisting chairside with banding, bonding and removal of appliances.
- Exposing/processing radiographs as requested under OSHA guidelines.
- Performing routine daily maintenance of dental equipment under OSHA guidelines.
- Keeping orthodontic graduate clinic areas clean including deep cleaning of units during school breaks.
- Restocking graduate clinic units.
- Notifying Department administration when supplies need to be ordered.
- Explaining clinical operation policies and procedures to students, faculty and newly employed dental assistants.
- Pouring models and fabricating clear retainers.
- Setting up orthodontic trays and equipment for procedures.
- Assisting with mixing of materials, and facilitate impression taking or intraoral scanning.
- Helping place separators, change arch wires under OSHA guidelines.
- Preparing orthodontic instruments for sterilization.
- Helping direct patients to available chairs in situations of patient overflow.
- Other departmental duties as required.
Successful candidates will be subject to a criminal background check.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Successful completion of an ADAA dental assistance program or two years of chairside assistant experience assisting in four-handed method of dentistry.
- Must have a current certificate of registration to practice as a dental assistant issued by the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners.
- Must possess current Iowa certificate of proficiency in dental radiography.
Applicants must have the following, by time of appointment:
- Successful completion of ADAA-accredited dental assistant program or 24 full-time months chairside dental assisting experience in four-handed dental practice.
- Must have a current certificate of registration to practice as a dental assistant issued by the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners.
- Must possess current Iowa certificate of proficiency in dental radiography.
