Broad Scope and Function

The Recreational Therapist is responsible for the management and development of a well-organized inclusive recreation program, referred to as All In Recreation (AIR), which provides opportunities for individuals to participate in diverse offering of inclusive and adaptive recreation activities and education within the University at a variety of skill and ability levels. The position will implement and review program goals, objectives, policies, and risk management procedures. Additionally, the position will work directly with individuals with disabilities conducting assessments and directing services and treatment. The position will assist and support budget planning, monitor expenses, assess program learning outcomes, and work with the Union WELL Inc. design team to promote program offerings.

Reporting Relationship

The position reports to, and receives general direction from, the Assistant Director of Intramurals and Staff Development. The position will supervise part-time staff in their area, including interns, graduate assistants, student assistants, casual employees, and volunteers.

Conditions of Employment

This is a full-time, exempt from overtime, benefited position, covered under the California Public Employees’ Retirement System. Continued employment in this position is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the employee, and either University Enterprises or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Business, Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, or a related field.

2. Must have current CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) certification with working knowledge of the Therapeutic Recreation Process: Assessment, Planning, Implementing, and Evaluation.

3. Demonstrated experience with adaptive sports and recreation and adaptive equipment.

4. Demonstrated progressively responsible experience coordinating programs and activities for persons with disabilities.

5. Demonstrated supervisory or management experience including selecting, training, coordinating, evaluating, and supervising a diverse work force.

6. Working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

7. Knowledge of personnel management, budgeting, and facilities management.

8. Ability to direct management goals, facilitate change, and create innovative programs.

9. Knowledge of safety procedures and protocols as they relate to inclusive recreation activities.

10. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

11. Ability to compile, prepare, write, and review reports.

12. Demonstrated experience using computer software applications including word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, internet, and email software, such as the programs in the Microsoft Office Suite.

13. Must be able to work evenings and weekends based on program demands.

14. Experience working in a multicultural educational environment.

15. Must acquire CPR/AED and First Aid certification within three (3) months of employment. Certification must be kept current.

16. Must pass a background check, which may include fingerprinting. Must continue to meet the established standards.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Master’s Degree in Recreation Therapy, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Business, Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, or a related field.

2. Two or more years of progressively responsible experience, knowledge of and skill working in a college or university recreation environment.

3. Previous experience writing and managing grants.

4. Previous experience supervising Recreation Therapy interns.

Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods of time; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computers; telephones; calculators; copy machines; fax machines; printers and scanners. Lifts up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office and recreation center environment; continuous contact with staff, frequent contact with the campus community, and the public.

Project Description

The Union WELL Inc. is an auxiliary of California State University, Sacramento and is a California 501© 3 Not for Profit Corporation. The corporation consists of two buildings, the University Union and the Recreation Wellness Center (The WELL). The WELL facility houses both Recreational Programs and Health Services. The WELL offers a fully integrated wellness service for students, faculty, and staff. The Recreation Center consists of 124,000 square feet, and the Health Center consists of 29,000 square feet. The facility houses the following amenities: basketball courts, MAC court, racquetball courts, fitness studios, cardio center, weight lifting center, personal training, group fitness, fitness testing room, climbing wall with a bouldering area, café/food service, small conference center, men’s and women’s locker rooms, a cabana locker room, and administrative offices, in addition to various lounges.

03. Creates and leads a dynamic and motivated staff and volunteer team, using a high-quality process including: recruiting, hiring, training, development, and evaluation of staff and volunteers.

04. Serves as The WELL’s primary contact for all Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodation requests.

05. Monitors and evaluates AIR events while in progress and is available during hours of AIR competition to provide guidance to involved staff.

06. Schedules appropriate facilities for all AIR affiliated trainings, leagues, tournaments.

07. Serves as the primary risk manager for AIR by working with university colleagues to develop risk management plans, procedures, and protocol for the safety of all program participants, volunteers, and employees. Coordinates all activities with the primary risk manager for The WELL.

08. Implements a program specific risk management plan including but not limited to verification of participant eligibility, waivers and incident reports, conducting staff training and the collection of required forms.

09. Evaluates risk management needs associated with all AIR and inclusive recreation programs. Consults as needed with the Assistant Director, Intramurals and Staff Development and proposes appropriate policy changes to provide a safe environment for all.

10. Works with the WELL Marketing team, and the Union WELL Inc. design team to help implement effective AIRaffiliated marketing strategies, and present and promote programs to various on campus and off campus groups.

11. Assists in the formation, review, and enforcement of all policies and procedures relating to AIR, including annual revisions of all sport rules, policies, and regulations.
