Capitol Bureau Chief
The Sacramento Bee is seeking an aggressive, creative editor to serve as our California Capitol Bureau chief.
We want a candidate with beat reporting chops and investigative skills to lead our team of reporters covering policy and politics in the fifth-largest economy in the world.
Every challenge confronting California today comes through the Capitol: inequality, housing, climate change, criminal justice, racism, COVID and more. Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Democratic leaders in the Legislature have once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to address those challenges and more with the state pulling in back-to-back budget surpluses running in the tens of billions of dollars. We’re looking for an editor who can shape coverage that interprets the Capitol and holds elected officials accountable for their decisions.
Daily duties for this editing position include guiding coverage of key political figures in California, the state Legislature, 2022 elections and the state workforce. This position also oversees California stories from two reporters based in Washington, D.C.
We’re looking for a skilled editor who will help ensure that our Capitol coverage is first and best and can handle everything from breaking news to deep enterprise. The ability to use analytics to understand audience and manage others to success are essential for this work.
