Assistant Local News Editor
The Sacramento Bee is looking for an Assistant Local News Editor to join our collaborative and energetic news team covering California’s capital region and Northern California. This editor will be a key player in directing breaking news coverage, working with reporters to develop high-impact stories and executing news initiatives on all platforms.
The successful candidate should have excellent news judgment and a sense of urgency. This editor will coach reporters on covering breaking news and developing enterprise stories on their beats, primarily cops and courts. This editor also will work with visual journalists and other teams to serve our diverse and fast-growing communities.
We value accountability journalism and a commitment to accuracy, fairness and ethics, as well as a creative and collaborative approach to delivering news on all of our platforms. We’re looking for a newsroom leader who will work closely with colleagues in shaping our coverage.
This editor should embrace the challenge of developing news packages for both digital and print. We are a digital-first newsroom that leverages metrics and analytics to improve our coverage, particularly for the four-county Sacramento region. We are also focused on innovative approaches that create connections between our print and digital products. An understanding of both platforms is critical.
Role and responsibilities:

Lead our PM breaking news efforts with urgency.

Work with reporters to drive coverage and develop stories off the news, with a focus on accountability journalism.

Communicate with other editors to help shape coverage.

Coordinate digital and print initiatives.
Education: College degree preferred.
Experience:
At least 2 years of local news experience; editing experience is a plus.
Requirements:

Strong word editing and organizational skills.

Familiarity with both print and digital planning and packaging.

Excellent news judgment and journalism ethics.

Strong collaborative instincts and a love of teamwork.

Experience in directing news coverage.

Must have reliable transportation.
