Retirement - CalPERS Miscellaneous retirement: Classic employee 3% @ 60, PEPRA employee 2% @ 62

District contributes 92% of the health plan premium and the employee is responsible for the remaining 8% of the premium for the whole family up to $3053.70 per month. Dental and vision insurance are also paid by the District.

Life Insurance - $20,000 for the first probationary year and $100,000 thereafter.

FLEET SHOP ASSISTANT

Under general supervision, assists with parts room deliveries, stocking of shelves, basic data entry, pickup and delivery of district vehicles. Perform basic preventative maintenance and inspection on fire apparatus and support vehicles. Assist Fire Mechanics with preventative maintenance and repairs. Reads and understands written instructions concerning servicing and installation of accessories; uses proper safety precautions while working in the servicing area; works safely in and around automotive equipment; safely drives vehicles; learns proper methods to diagnose and repair mechanical problems of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment; performs maintenance of shop facility.

 

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

Regular and reliable attendance is a requirement of the job.

 

  1. Picks up and delivers vehicles or merchandise to the various stations, administration, or other locations as required; drives automotive equipment to dealers for warranty work.
  2. Assists in the Parts Department, stores and issues parts for automotive equipment; checks equipment parts such as shock absorbers, motor mounts, universal joints, power steering mechanism, and brake units to detect malfunctioning or defective units for repair.
  3. Replaces oil filters, air filters, radiator hoses, fan belts, light bulbs, battery cables, and windshield wiper blades as necessary; replaces coolant in automotive radiators. Lubricates chassis and changes oil in automotive equipment using grease gun and hand tools; fills fuel tanks of automotive equipment with appropriate fuel.
  4. Repairs, changes, and installs automotive tires; tests, services, recharges, and changes batteries; learns to diagnose and repair mechanical automotive and fire apparatus equipment problems. 
  5. Perform daily maintenance of shop facility.
  6. Other related duties as assigned by supervisor. 

 

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

 

Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background check and a physical to include a drug screen.

 

The education or experience requirements may be modified or waived at the sole discretion of the Fire Chief.  At least one of the education or experience requirements must be met; both requirements cannot be modified or waived.  The Sacramento Metro Fire District Board of Directors shall be notified of any such modifications or waivers.  

 

Age

 

Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

 

Education and Experience 

 

Education must be obtained through a post-secondary institution currently accredited by any accreditation body recognized by either the Counsel for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education.

 

Required:

 

  1. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent GED Certificate.
  2. One (1) year of full-time experience servicing automotive equipment with fuel, lubricants, and accessories. 

 

Desirable: 

 

  1. Bilingual ability.


Knowledge of:

1. Proper use and maintenance of hand and light-duty power tools used for basic automotive maintenance.

2. Proper servicing techniques for automotive and fire apparatus accessories and components such as batteries, tires, cooling systems, belts, electrical parts, brakes, hoses, and filters.

3. Methods and equipment used in servicing automotive and fire apparatus equipment with oils, greases, and lubricants; safety practices used in mechanical repair areas.

4. Filling out basic paperwork.

5. Understanding general knowledge of automotive parts and nomenclature.

 

Ability to:

1. Establish and maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with a wide variety of people that include senior management, employees, outside agencies, and the general public.

2. Read and write English.

3. Learn and comply with safety rules.

4. Bend, stoop, stretch and turn.

5. Use basic shop equipment and hand tools in a safe manner.

6. Read, understand and follow written directives and oral instructions.

7. Record and research information in electronic databases and other related paperwork.
