Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs routine to complex fire and life safety inspections in new and existing occupancies. Upon completion of a comprehensive training program, incumbents will interpret and enforce federal, state and local regulations as they apply to mandated inspections, operational fire code permits, general business inspections, weed abatement, fireworks, special event permits, complaints related to fire and life safety, may assist/perform origin and cause fire investigations, provides technical consultation, assistance and collaboration to industries and other governmental agencies; is subject to call back and can work weekends or irregular work hours during the day or evening; performs other duties as required.

- Inspects difficult and complex residential, licensed care, commercial, and industrial buildings, facilities and larger places of public assembly including hospitals, convalescent hospitals, stadiums, auditoriums and multi-story buildings; to determine and enforce compliance with local and state fire and life safety codes.
- Provides technical assistance to fire companies; interprets policies, procedures, and documents relating to types of chemicals and requirements of disclosure laws.
- Evaluates information provided on disclosure forms, issues permits, and assigns fees; interprets policies, procedures, and documents relating to types of chemicals and requirements of disclosure laws; determines if business emergency plan is required; reviews, evaluates, and processes business emergency plans.
- Collects, analyzes, and evaluates data and prepares comprehensive reports.
- Interprets the various local, state, and national fire and life safety codes for the public and makes recommendations.
- Writes reports based on field notes; issues Notices of Violation and citations for code violations; initiates prosecution and prepares materials necessary for litigation.
- Trains district personnel on fire inspection, prevention practices and procedures, and hazardous materials disclosure.
- Investigates fire and life safety complaints received from the public and takes appropriate action.
- Develops, produces, coordinates, and maintains hazardous materials data on facilities within the District's boundaries.
- Participates in public information/education activities.
- Investigates the cause of a fire; preserves evidence; cooperates with local, state and federal agencies in detection, apprehension, and prosecution of arsonists.
- In a temporary situation, can be in command of an area and its personnel and programs; can be in a position to act as supervisor to probationary inspectors.
- Works with state and local governmental agencies for compliance and enforcement of fire codes and standards, weed and rubbish abatement, and hazardous material disclosure and enforcement.
- Checks subordinate's work for completeness and accuracy; ensures that all possible sources of information have been utilized and determines whether conclusions agree with the findings.
- Enforces laws and regulations pertaining to fireworks.
- Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Typical Qualifications:
Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background check and a physical to include a drug screen.
The education or experience requirements may be modified or waived at the sole discretion of the Fire Chief. At least one of the education or experience requirements must be met; both requirements cannot be modified or waived. The Sacramento Metro Fire District Board of Directors shall be notified of any such modifications or waivers.
Age
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
Education and Experience
Education must be obtained through a post secondary institution currently accredited by any accreditation body recognized by either the Counsel for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education.
Required:
1. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent GED certificate.
2. Completed a minimum of fifteen (15) college units in Fire Science or equivalent.
3. Possess or be able to obtain Penal Code 832 Certificate within twelve (12) months of hire date as a condition of employment.
4. Successful completion of the Fire Inspector I Task Book is required by the end of the 12 month probationary period.
Desirable:
1. Bilingual ability.
2. An Associate degree from an accredited college.
Knowledge of:
1. Correct usage of English for effective written and oral communication involving varying levels of complexity.
Ability to:
1. Establish and maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with a wide variety of people that include senior management, employees, outside agencies, and the general public.
2. Understand, interpret, and apply Uniform Fire Code and other applicable state and local laws and ordinances and federal laws.
3. Detect fire hazards and code violations and determine appropriate mitigation measures.
4. Express ideas clearly, concisely, orally, and in writing.
5. Communicate effectively and tactfully with the public on a variety of fire and life safety issues; gain cooperation in correction of violations.
6. Stand, walk, sit, stoop, bend, lift, squat, climb ladders and stairs, work in high places, work inside or outside in all weather conditions under varying physical conditions and in closely confined areas.
7. Plan and independently perform fieldwork with general supervision.
8. Use tact and good judgement in contacts with the public and state and local agencies.
9. Prepare clear and comprehensive reports and keep accurate records.
10. Understand and apply district programs, goals, objectives, and policies.
11. Write legibly in English; uses keyboard skills and utilize District computer software.
12. Type at least 30 words per minute.
