Salary: $56,221.08 - $68,146.80 Annually
Under general supervision, develops, prepares and presents fire and life safety programs, other education programs, and services to the public and District personnel; develops and presents fire and life safety programs, informational materials, newsletter or other District publications, and handouts; coordinates the presentation of educational services at various community facilities within the District; work is assigned in terms of general objectives and results obtained; performs community risk assessments; subject to being called back when off duty and may work on weekends or be assigned irregular work hours during the day or the evening; performs other duties as required; and may be assigned to lead a team of Community Relations personnel including Community Risk Educator's.
CHARACTERISTICS
This classification performs duties specific to community relations including the composition and preparation of a wide variety of written materials in support of various instructional, audiovisual, educational or informational programs including both the clarity and grammatical correctness of writing and the appropriateness of style and content. This class functions under general supervision. The position incumbent is authorized to make Budget Expenditures approved by the Community Relations Manager.
Age
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
Education and Experience
Education must be obtained through a post secondary institution currently accredited by any accreditation body recognized by either the Counsel for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education.
Required:
1. An Associate of Arts degree in Fire Science, Training, Journalism, Communication or education programs that meet the knowledge and ability requirements listed below.
2. Successfully complete California State Fire Marshal’s Certificate of completion for Community Risk Officer – Specialist within 18 months of hire date as a condition of employment.
Desirable:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Teaching, Training, Journalism, Communications or related education that meet the knowledge and ability requirements listed below; or
2. Two (2) years of experience in Fire Service Public Education and/or Community Relations or related field that meet the knowledge and ability requirements listed below.
3. Bilingual ability.
Knowledge of:
1. Techniques and principles of developing public education and training.
2. Communication skills used for group discussions and instruction.
3. Correct English usage as applied to writing instructional, informational or directive material of varying degrees of technical complexity, basing style and content on purpose of material, technical complexity of subject, and knowledge, interest and skill level of intended audience.
4. Methods of research and data collection.
5. Processes involved in the composition, layout and production of informational and educational material.
6. Audio/visual media capabilities for public education and instructional purposes.
7. Teaching techniques and classroom training aids.
8. Uses and capabilities of word processing equipment and print media.
Ability to:
1. Establish and maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with a wide variety of people that include senior management, employees, outside agencies, and the general public.
2. Recognize how public education program goals support District program goals and objectives; evaluate public education programs.
3. Complete work assignments with a minimum of supervision.
4. Utilize computer keyboard and type 30 words per minute.
