Plant Mechanic (Water Quality Mechanic)
To perform mechanical and electrical repairs to treatment plants and pumping plant equipment, pressure regulating stations, and other power driven equipment; to weld and fabricate metal work; and to operate and maintain the pumping plants.
Required Qualifications:
- Practices, procedures, methods and tools used in the mechanical repair of equipment, pumps, motors and related power driven equipment.
- Practices of electrical repair on equipment up to 480v.
- Safety practices used in electrical, mechanical, pump and plumbing maintenance and repair.
- Methods of welding and fabrication.
- Water treatment and water distribution equipment and controls.
- Basic mathematics.
- Basic electrical wiring.
- Modern office equipment.
- Principles and practices of customer service.
Required Abilities:
- Inspect and repair pumps, electric motors and related power driven equipment associated with Agency facilities and mechanical equipment.
- Estimate cost, materials and time of repairs.
- Use a variety of tools and equipment with skill and safety.
- Weld safely with arc, gas, TIG and MIG.
- Maintain shop maintenance and safety records.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Read and understand blueprints.
- Perform electrical repairs on equipment up to 480v.
- Safely operate a motor vehicle and other work related equipment.
- Conduct rigging for load lifting.
- Operate a computer using word processing and business software.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience and Education:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Five years of progressively journey-level experience in the maintenance of water treatment plant equipment, pumping stations or other related power driven equipment.
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in welding or mechanical, electrical or diesel maintenance. Similar training may be substitute for one year of the experience.
