Searching for candidates for the position of Director, Enterprise Operations/Deputy Director, ARL. This position reports to the Executive Director of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University as a key member of ARL’s management team. A two-fold position, responsibilities will be to ensure ARL’s enterprise functions are synchronized with the needs of ARL’s research operations, as well as the day-to-day management of the Laboratory. We are open to hiring the successful candidate in either the Research and Development Engineer track or non-tenure Faculty rank.
What YOU Will Do…
You will
• Oversee and manage ARL’s Enterprise Operations’ functions, which includes: Business Services; Engineering Services; Human Resources Services; Information Technology Services; and Security Services
• Oversee and manage ARL’s Process Excellence team to support excellence in research administration and execution through process optimization efforts
• Assist the Executive Director with the day-to-day management of ARL, providing technical and administrative leadership to ensure the quality and productivity of all programs; develop and execute strategic and implementation plans; work with leadership to oversee execution of approximately $280M per year of sponsored research; and maintain an effective organizational structure with efficient management practices
• Conduct the day-to-day management of ARL in the absence of the Executive Director
• Lead initiatives directed at improving the pace, efficacy, and efficiency of overall management processes, and conduct periodic reviews and updates of management processes
• Lead initiatives for employee engagement and the professional development of ARL research faculty, staff, and staff support
What YOU Need to be Successful…
Education: An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in an Engineering or Science discipline plus 15 or more years of related experience
Required experience/skills:
• A demonstrated record and capability to manage a large, diverse organization that is performing leading-edge contract research and development in support of the Navy and DoD
• Experience as an effective administrator
• A demonstrated record of achievement, preferably in a university research environment
• Experience managing programs and people
• A demonstrated capability to set and meet goals and objectives
• Personal characteristics of high energy and integrity, capability to work and communicate with others, ability to solve problems, sound judgment, and a commitment to diversity
• Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills
You will be subject to a government security investigation and must possess a current eligibility for a Top Secret security clearance. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the ARL will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. Due to the financial or fiduciary responsibilities of this position, successful completion of a credit history check will also be required, in addition to standard background checks.
