Description:

Position Summary:  The Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality (TRQ) is responsible for the recruitment of high-quality teachers to meet the staffing needs of Department of Education (DOE) public schools, as well as being responsible for initiatives to promote the equitable and quality distribution of teachers across all schools.  Research has repeatedly shown that teacher quality is the single most important variable in raising student learning. The Office accomplishes its work through a strategic, data-driven approach.  Among TRQ’s responsibilities are to:

 

  • Serve as the primary marketing agent and source of information to individuals seeking to become DOE public school teachers, to recruit a large, high-quality, and diverse pool of candidates.
  • Design and manage recruitment initiatives, programs, and pathways for individuals to become DOE teachers, especially to address subject and geographic shortage areas.
  • Select a high-quality pool of candidates to become teachers through rigorous, research-driven screening processes.
  • Provide strategic assistance to schools to help them make optimal local hiring decisions.
  • Lead teacher portfolio initiatives, including incentives to promote an equitable distribution of teachers across all schools, and especially to ensure that students with the greatest need are served by highly effective educators.

 

The Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality is looking for a Communications and Outreach Coordinator to support ambitious goals to recruit, select and train first-year teachers to transform educational opportunities for NYC’s highest-need students. The Coordinator will be responsible for assisting with the overall operations of programs, communicating with applicants, current program participants, and schools, and managing detail-oriented projects, including data tracking. The Coordinator plays a critical role to help ensure that teaching candidates, program participants, and school stakeholders have an exceptional experience. Performs related work.

Key Relationships: Works closely with many members of the Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality, and with the broader NYC community. Other key relationships will include other offices within the Division of Human Capital, various teacher certification program participants, university partners, and external partners and vendors.

 

Responsibilities

Strategy and Design

  • Work with team members to meet and exceed DOE teacher hiring goals.
  • Collaborate on recruitment program design, policy, and implementation, and act as a strategic thought partner to ensure that resources align with strategic objectives, particularly around recruiting teacher candidates for the DOE’s highest-need schools and communities.
  • Plan, implement, coordinate, monitor, and/or evaluate recruitment strategies with community-based organizations and university partners.
  • Analyze and evaluate which recruitment strategies are most effective to reach recruitment targets.
  • Work closely with Recruitment Managers to develop and improve marketing and recruitment strategies to engage community-based organizations and teacher candidates.
  • Manage special projects and programs related to teacher recruitment, including subject-specific recruitment for high-need areas, including ESL and bilingual education.

 

Outreach

  • Maintain effective systems for communications, documentation, and events.
  • Conduct outreach to relevant community-based organizations and program participants.
  • Develop and manage information sessions for various partners and teacher candidates; assist with networking events.
  • Liaise with internal and external partners, including various DOE departments and community-based organizations, to create systems and structures that will further enhance recruitment efforts, including candidate and teacher experiences.
  • Address the concerns of teacher candidates and program participants through individualized support and one-on-one consultations.
  • Liaise with university partners to maximize the pipeline of teacher candidates.
  • Create print and online collateral to support the DOE’s annual recruitment and program needs for community-based organizations and other stakeholders.

 

Coordination and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with colleagues within TRQ to cultivate candidates in its pipeline to convert to hires, in order to support principals in filling high-need vacancies, and to create strong ways to display candidate information to school hiring managers.
  • Prepare and support seamless program operations Ensure a keen eye to processes, from document collection and distribution to data entry and tracking.
  • Provide customer service, guidance, support, and technical assistance to all internal and external recruitment partners, including community-based organizations, the DHC’s Office of Field Services, HR Connect, Borough/Citywide Office HR Directors, and institutions of higher education.

 

Qualification Requirements:

Minimum

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  2. High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one (1) year of experience as described in “1” above.

 

Preferred

  • Commitment to high quality teachers for high-needs NYC schools.
  • Impeccable attention to detail and ability to handle logistics.
  • Experience working in or with schools, especially in urban public schools.
  • Experience in project management, including goal-setting and tracking, planning, and implementation.
  • A passion for education, and especially teacher recruitment.
  • Experience with and ability to use data analysis systems (e.g., Excel or Access) to manage and track large volumes of information.
  • A collaborative spirit and eager to contribute and learn in a fast-moving environment.
  • Strong communication skills; crisp, clear, accurate and polished style of communication.
  • Strong organizational skills; the ability to manage several projects simultaneously and prioritize among them.
  • Strong relationship management skills.
  • Work well independently and in teams, in a position of authority and as a collaborator.
  • Ability to work with and through others in order to achieve success.
  • An advanced degree in public policy, business, education, or other applicable field.
  • Proficient skills with Microsoft applications.

 

Salary: $53,961+

 

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
