Job Description
Provide accounting and financial support to the College of Science and Engineering (CoSE), the Office of Research (OR), and other units as assigned.  Assist the University Business Officer (UBO) for these units in monitoring and controlling budget status for appropriated, local and grant funds.  This position will analyze financial transaction data, research and resolve variances, and prepare management reports, and will provide direct support as needed to account directors.  Other accounting duties as assigned. Key responsibilities include: 

  • Monitor and report on budget status for appropriated, local, and grant funds in CoSE and OR
  • Extract, analyze, and summarize financial data and produce monitoring reports to help identify trends and other characteristics leading to recommendations for system enhancements, greater efficiencies and controls in business processes, and various reporting and auditing needs
  • Perform the routine and ongoing review of pre-payment and post-payment transactions to monitor source and use of funds compliance and address identified exceptions
  • Monitor and report on key initiatives within CoSE and OR, including accounting for faculty start-up packages, internal grant awards, one-time capital purchase awards and other priorities identified by the UBO and senior management that occur across many departments and fund sources
  • Provide assistance and training to departmental financial technicians in performing reconciliations, journal vouchers, budget transfers, and other transactional activities
  • Ensure compliance with ISU policies and procedures in accounting, purchasing, inventory, travel and other accounting and finance related activities

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, or business-related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in internal or external auditing, accounting/finance or business analysis, or a related field
  • Strong problem solving, analytical, and investigative research skills
  • Excels at understanding and synthesizing financial data for communications and decision making
  • Ability to interact with management and staff at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to bring new ideas and perspective to existing practices and processes
  • Excellent teamwork, interpersonal, and relationship management skills required
  • Self-starter with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with teams
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a dynamic work environment

Preferred Qualifications 

  • 1-2 years of experience in Higher Education 
  • Ellucian Banner ERP system and/or experience with similar ERP system or reporting software in a financial management environment
