DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to operate a variety of heavy equipment in the maintenance and construction of County roads; to perform skilled work in road and bridge maintenance and to perform related work as required.
Road Maintenance Worker I:
This is an entry-level classification and individuals are assigned to a variety of work, including heavy physical tasks and the operation of a variety of road maintenance equipment on training or relief assignments. Incumbents are expected to become proficient in the operation of the equipment normally operated by the class of Road Maintenance Worker II, and to gain a thorough knowledge of the geography and road names in Nevada County.
Examples of Duties
Essential:
Performs a variety of heavy physical work, including digging and back-filling of trenches, clearing of brush, limbs and trees from right of ways, clearing of debris from culverts and ditches, patching of potholes and snow removal
Performs traffic control duties such as flagging and setting up barricades
Operates miscellaneous equipment such as jack hammers, chainsaws, pavement breakers, and portable compaction tools
Loads and operates a variety of trucks and trailer rigs in hauling pipe, timber, steel, equipment, sand, gravel, water and other materials to road and bridge work sites
Operates front-end loaders, rollers, backhoes, graders, bulldozers, scrapers, mechanical brush cutters and chippers, and snow blowers and other snow removal equipment in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads
Prepares materials for road surfacing
Performs a variety of work on roads such as patching, crack sealing, sand/chip sealing, base failure repair, tree removal, brush control and dust control
Performs equipment safety inspections
Operates medium and heavy equipment in finishing work to exact engineering specifications and plans
May inspect, maintain and repair bridge deckings, railings, approaches, culverts, and load bearing structures, as well as painting, building forms, pouring and finishing concrete, pre-working and locating bridge members, operating air compressors and drills, and dismantling bridges and related structures
May work independently in performing road maintenance functions in permanent road divisions and County service areas
Supervises and directs work of road crew in the absence of the foreman; schedules manpower and equipment; orders material; enforces safety procedures and practices; completes labor and material documents; directs work according to performance standards and insures task completion in conformance with engineering plans and specifications
Important:
May maintain bridge inventory and repair records, prepare estimated repair costs, and maintain liaison with County bridge engineers
Knowledge and Skills Required
Knowledge of:
Safe work practices
Operation and maintenance of a variety of medium and heavy road maintenance equipment
Geography and road names of a Nevada County road maintenance district
Provisions of the California Vehicle Code relating to the operation of medium and heavy equipment on streets and roads
Safety practices and procedures pertaining to the operation of medium and heavy equipment
Principles of supervision and training
Methods, procedures, tools and materials used in the repair and maintenance of bridges
Skill in:
Learning to maintain and make minor repairs on roads
Performing physical labor requiring strength, manual dexterity, and agility
Reading and comprehending equipment operation manuals, performance standards and job instructions
Writing and completing vehicle accident, industrial injury, and safety inspection reports
Understanding and carry out oral and written instructions
Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Safely operating a variety of medium and heavy road maintenance equipment
Operating a variety of medium and heavy road or bridge maintenance equipment with a high degree of skill and precision
Using heavy equipment, cutting, filling and leveling road base to exact engineering plans and specifications
Reading, interpreting and following engineering plans and specifications
Basic supervisory and team leadership principals
Promoting and enforcing safe work and equipment operation practices
Estimating and scheduling staff, equipment and materials required to complete road or bridge maintenance projects
Monitoring and maintaining time and equipment records
Education and Experience Required
Road Maintenance Worker I:
Completion of 12th grade or equivalent.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class C operator's license issued by a State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Mobility and strength to lift and carry up to 51 pounds, bend, crouch, stoop and stretch; strength and stamina to perform sustained strenuous manual labor; vision to read handwritten and printed materials; hearing and speech to communicate in person and by telephone/radio; Willingness and ability to work in exposure to weather, equipment noise, vibration, jolting, traffic and exhaust fumes.
Must work additional hours outside regular schedule and in response to emergencies.

Other Requirements
Positions in these classifications are defined as "Safety Sensitive" per the U.S. Department of Transportation regulations.
