DESCRIPTION:
The City of Redding Electric Utility is seeking a highly qualified and self-motivated individual
to fill a current vacancy within the Power Control Center Distribution group. Under general
supervision, this position is responsible to direct the safe and reliable operation, control,
and monitoring of the Redding Electric Utility's Distribution and Sub-Transmission systems
while operating under the policies and procedures set forth by the City of Redding Electric
Utility.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Prepare, check, and administer the execution of safe and reliable switching procedures,
both for City personnel and in coordination with other interconnected utilities; maintain
and update the maps which indicate the current electric system status; monitor and
maintain equipment loading levels to prevent damage during switching and various loading
periods; prepare necessary reports to advise City personnel of system events; prepare
the necessary reports as required to meet City and regulatory agency requirements;
respond to customer problems in a courteous, efficient, and professional manner; contact
other City Departments as required to advise them of outages pertaining to their
equipment; make rapid decisions on the best and safest method of handling emergency
situations, outages, and curtailments; and take corrective action when required; work with
engineers and support staff to develop and improve software and automation processes,
assist in the development of operational procedures for distribution system operation,
assist with training; obtain and maintain applicable certifications as required; Perform
related duties as assigned.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of: Electric Utility operating practices; Electric Utility equipment limitations;
system protection equipment as these apply to the Electric Utility; principles and practices
of mathematics as it pertains to Electric Utility operations.
Ability to: Interact effectively with the public and employees; demonstrate strong internal
and external communication skills; build and maintain relationships with the public and
fellow utility personnel; make rapid decisions in emergency situations; read, interpret, and
maintain maps that indicate current electric system status; operate a personal computer
and SCADA system; operate two-way radio equipment; perform duties with safety, skill
and efficiency; work independently and alone; multi-task; and apply the practices and
procedures of neighboring utilities regarding emergency situations; respond to customer
problems in a courteous, efficient, and professional manner; and work a shift schedule.
Education & Experience: Any combination of training and experience that provides the
required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; typical education would include the
completion of industry acknowledged coursework in system operations (WECC System
Operator classes or equivalent), or an applicable apprenticeship or two years college
coursework from an accredited college or university. Typical experience would include
three years relevant experience with an Electric Utility. Two additional years (two years)
of extensive experience in an Electric Operations Center as a Distribution System Operator
or Dispatcher may be used to substitute for the two years of college coursework.
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid California driver's license, or the ability to
acquire one within ten days of appointment. NERC Transmission Operator certification is
desirable.
Employment Incentives:
Provide Continuing Education Hours to maintain existing NERC Certification.
Provide training and testing to obtain up to a Balancing, Interchange and
Transmission (BT) NERC Certification for new hires without a NERC Certification.

Examination Process: A written exam will be administered. An oral board will be
conducted for those who successfully pass the written exam.
Veterans Credit: Veterans who have received an honorable discharge from the military
service and receive a passing score on the examination will have 2 points added to their
final examination score. To obtain this credit, veterans MUST provide a copy of the
DD214, indicating honorable discharge, WITH EACH EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE.
